So, there I was, happily** going through the old photos that the data recovery software had kindly rescued and copying several hundred into the directory where they belonged for LightRoom Classic to pick up. Out of nowhere, my all-in-one PC’s screen inexplicably went black. The second monitor, where the copy was showing, continued until it finished. “Hmmm, this isn’t good” thinks I, wondering what’s going on. So, I shut the PC down and restart it. The good news is that, post-restart, the main screen is working OK. The bad news is that now there’s nothing on the second monitor.

Snapping into problem-identification mode, I try restarting again. Still nothing. I swap the HDMI cable out. Nope. I try detecting the second monitor in Windows Settings. No second monitor detected. Checking the driver-update history reveals that no driver updates have taken place recently. I check the monitor by connecting it to another PC – it works perfectly.

All this now strongly suggests that the problem lies with the PC itself. I only bought it in February of this year and it’s still under warranty, so at least the repair shouldn’t cost me anything. But the inconvenience of being without the PC while it’s away being repaired (I bought it from PC World, so it won’t be an in-store repair) will be a royal pain in the derriere.

Oh, and my carpet cleaner decided to come out in sympathy and start leaking. I need that on a regular basis, too, for reasons that it’s best not to explore here.

** “Happily” is used here for ironic effect only. It’s tedious and time-consuming.

In other news, here’s another completely unrelated image to feast your eyes on.

A colour image of a pair of well-worn but decorative black cowboy boots. The boots are in profile, one boot in front of the other, with it's heel o the toe of the boot behind. They are in a shop window, with a handwritten "FOR SALE" sign taped to the glass.
